Nowhere! Come to Australia!

The continent of Australia is divided into six states (Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia) and two territories (the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory), which are essentially states.

The first European landfall was in early 1606 by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon who claimed the untamed land as "New Holland." The Dutch did not actually settle "New Holland," but they did chart the northern and western coasts.

It was explorer James Cook who claimed the new found land for England in 1770. The six original colonies, now the states, formed a federation and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The Commonwealth became a British dominion in 1907, but the English severed formal ties with Australia in 1939.

Today 22 million people call Australia home, and the country has the world's 13th largest economy. It is a modern country with a prosperous future.
